Southern Portugal and southern Spain have some of the mildest winters in Europe, and marinas that want your boat between October and April. That is the useful part: winter is when they are most open to a deal. This guide covers where cruisers winter, whether to stay afloat or come out, how to get a good winter price, and which marinas say they take boats for the winter.
Where do boats winter in the Algarve and southern Spain?
The Algarve (Portugal). Marinas line the south coast, and the ones cruisers mention most are:
- Marina de Lagos, the classic winter stop at the western end of the coast.
- Marina de Portimão, a short hop east.
- Marina de Albufeira, which cruisers have described as flexible on winter terms.
- Vilamoura Marina, the largest, with a big boatyard.
The Algarve faces the Atlantic, so the thing to plan for is a winter south-westerly pushing swell into a marina. Ask which pontoons are sheltered from it.
Southern Spain. On the Almería coast, Almerimar and Aguadulce have long been known for their winter liveaboard communities. Almerimar is quieter and further from town; Aguadulce sits at the edge of a good-sized village. Further east, around Cartagena and Mazarrón, the marinas publish long-stay and winter terms (see the list below).
You can see every marina we list in Portugal and Spain.
Should you winter afloat or ashore?
Afloat is the choice if you will live aboard or come and go. You can use the boat on a fine winter day, and you will not be alone: these coasts have a long tradition of people wintering aboard.
Ashore suits a boat that will sit until spring. Ask how the boat is held (cradle or stands), whether the lift and launch are in the price, and whether you may work on the boat yourself or must use the yard's staff.
How do you get a good winter price?
Winter is the marinas' quiet season, so ask for a winter or six-month package rather than a monthly rate, and compare a few. Cruisers on these coasts have long reported that marinas are open to a deal between September and April. Two more things worth asking:
- Whether they discount for members of the RYA, the Cruising Association or similar clubs. Some marinas have.
- Whether water and electricity are included or metered. On a winter contract with a heater running, that difference adds up.
If you want a feel for how berth prices are built, our guide to what a Mediterranean berth actually costs explains what drives them.
Can you live aboard over the winter?
Yes, in many marinas on both coasts, but check before you sign. Ask whether living aboard is allowed on your contract, whether it costs extra, and what the rule is if the boat comes out. If you will be away for weeks, ask whether someone will check the lines, the bilge and the shore power, and what that costs.
What to ask before you sign a winter contract
- The exact start and end dates. One Spanish marina below runs its winter rate from September to May, so do not assume every contract covers the same months.
- What the price includes, and what is extra.
- Lift capacity and the next free slot, if you are coming out.
- Who is on site at night, and what they do when a gale is forecast.
- Whether your insurer needs a named person to check the boat.
Marinas that offer winter berths or storage
Each of these says on its own website that it offers winter berths, long-stay terms or storage ashore. That tells you the service exists, not that there is room this winter.
- Marina de Albufeira: a dry parking area in its yard for wintering boats.
- Vilamoura Marina: dry storage for 200 boats and a boatyard.
- Puerto de Cartagena: a long-stay tariff for stays of six months or more.
- Puerto Deportivo Mazarrón: annual, summer and winter rates, with winter running September to May, plus dry storage.
- Puerto Deportivo Juan Montiel: winter storage for boats and trailers, and a 30 tonne travel lift.
Ask several marinas at once
Comparing winter deals means writing to several marinas and waiting for each to reply. Tell us your boat once on our request form and we will ask the marinas that fit, then pass their answers back to you.
