Longyearbyen is the main settlement of Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the High Arctic just 1,300km from the North Pole. Sailing to Svalbard is one of sailing's great adventures — polar bears, walrus, Arctic foxes and thousands of seabirds inhabit a pristine wilderness. Longyearbyen provides the essential logistics base for Arctic expeditions. The sailing season is July-August when ice conditions allow. A permit is required to land in the national parks.
