Lorient Marina is a major sailing centre on the south Breton coast, rebuilt after wartime destruction into a modern, well-equipped port with strong racing heritage — it is the home base for the Vendée Globe and Route du Rhum campaigns. The Rade de Lorient provides a broad, sheltered inner harbour, and the river Blavet leads inland to the historic town of Hennebont. The outer Breton coast — the Île de Groix, Belle-Île, and the Quiberon peninsula — is a short passage to the south and west. Atlantic swell can make the outer approaches lumpy in westerly weather; once inside the rade, conditions are calm. A lively, professional sailing community makes this a superb provisioning and refit stop.
